Photo of the Week: Christmas Week Storm

The Christmas Week Storm has delivered one of the greatest gifts imaginable this week, and snow-lovers across the Northeast are making the most of it in so many ways – by building snow forts, by enjoying turns with family and friends, or by sliding into the White Room wherever the terrain is steep and the snow especially deep. The luckiest mountain locales picked up 20+” of snow on Thursday, and the image here illustrates what many of the deepest turns of the day were like. No doubt, it was a great day to have an extra set of goggles in the pack!

There is more light snow on tap for the weekend, so keep those snowy thoughts flowing. Ski you out there! (Click on thumbnail below for enlarged image) – Brian and Emily

Photo of the Week: Misty Sunrise… and Happy Winter!

After several days of persistent snow, wet snow, fog, freezing fog, sleet, mist and more snow in the mountains, the sun finally shined for a few hours Thursday morning upon the highest elevations of the Northeast. By mid afternoon Thursday, clouds and snow enveloped our mountain tops once again, where we expect them to remain through much of the weekend, as winter officially kicks off. With some luck, many mountains will pick up a few more inches of good base-building snow Friday morning, perhaps some mixed precip and even rain to follow, and then a good 4 to 6 to 10?” of lighter snow by Sunday. Keep those snowy thoughts flowing. Old Man Winter is now officially here to stay for a while.

And Happy Winter Solstice to everyone, and we wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday season, too. Ski you out there!

Photo (Image) of the Week: SNOW LIKELY

While it’s still officially fall for a nearly another week, a wintry forecast here for the mountains of the Northeast (like the one depicted here, for north-central VT) is a sight for sore skiers’ eyes. And while this is still just a forecast (Courtesy: NWS), it is one of many that have been trending toward an increasingly snowy week ahead for most elevations across the mountain country of the Northeast. So, let’s continue to think snowy thoughts, and be ready to welcome the winter season in all its glory in the week ahead.

Ski you out there.

Photo(s) of the Week: SNOWvember gives way to DEEPcember

The passage of another cold front last Thursday left in its wake a windless and bluebird powder day for Northeastern skiers on Friday, the last day of SNOWvember. The Northeast woke to even more fresh snow falling in the mountains on Saturday, a fine kick off to one of our favorite months of the year – DEEPcember. Now, Old Man Winter seems to be stepping aside for a few days while he tends to some serious business out west, where rain and snowfall records have been challenged for days by one of the biggest winter storms to affect the region in years. The Old Man should be back on Wednesday. In the meanwhile, it’s back to Marquette Season

Photo(s) of the Week: Au Naturale

With all this sunshine, it’s hard to believe that the few inches of snow that fell last Tuesday are still producing some very fun skiing, but we’ll take it! Thankfully, temps have remained just cool enough on the cooler sides of the mountains to preserve the minimal natural snowpack. Fresh tracks have been easy to come by. And a subtle thaw/freeze cycle has helped to transform the snow surface into a carveable, sugar-coated, micro-base. No doubt, Marquette Season is still in full effect, and if you’ve got an appetite for fossil-fueled snow, there’s plenty of that to go around at the big ski resorts, too.

Warmer temps Tues-Friday threaten to burn back the natural snow we have, but it might be time to ride a few chairlifts, anyhow. Still, let’s hope the weather gods come through with a bit more au naturale this weekend.

Ski you out there.
