Photo of the Week: Two Feet on the Roof

Snow on the roof - Green Mountains, Vermont©Brian Mohr/EmberPhoto.com

While sorting through some photographs from the mid-February storm cycle here in the Northeast, this one caught our eyes. It’s the view out a two foot by two foot domed skylight above the pantry in our home, while buried by more than two feet of freshly settled snow on the roof. It’s pretty cool to see the different layers at work, evidence of cumulative snowfall events over the course of nearly three weeks. The brighter, layered middle zone leading to the white core at the center represents the changing snowfall rates and snow types associated with the Valentine’s Day Storm.

With snowflakes in the air again today, and several inches likely Thursday into Friday, we’ll be looking forward to the snow piling up around our skylight once again.

The 2014 Valentine’s Day Storm dumped as much as 30″ of snow across areas of Vermont and the Northeast – coating the region with a much needed base layer of snow, bringing skiing in the steeps back to life, and giving skiers like 13 yr old Turner Barbour (photo) a taste of some of the deepest turns we’ve all seen around here in a while. The storm’s abundant offerings are now settling out nicely, setting us up nicely for the hours, days and weeks ahead.

If you’ve got some great skiing images from the storm to share, please post them to our FB page (link below), and we’ll share them as they come in.

It’s snowing again now this morning, and the new fresh layer should make for some truly dreamy skiing over the next couple of days. A short-lived warmup is lining up for late Thursday through Friday, so we’d suggest dropping everything right now and getting out there, if you haven’t already.

Ski you out there.

The Next Generation: Like Father, Like Daughter

Jamie Bouchard fires up some trailside hot drinks while backcountry skiing with her dad, Dave. Green Mountains, Vermont ©Dave Bouchard / EmberPhoto

With the recent return of snow in the lower elevations, a great variety of human-powered skiing opportunities have opened up in our backyards, on sloped pastures, and within our town and state parks close to home. First timer Jamie Bouchard, 11, was introduced to backcountry skiing by her dad this past weekend at historic Little River State Park in Waterbury Vt.

Two separate exploratory outings, and the combination of sunshine, generic viagra no prescription needed scenery and trailside hot drinks, was all it took to convince the young Bouchard that there is great adventure beyond the lift-served slopes of our favorite ski areas. Apparently, she can’t wait to get out there again. And Dad’s simply stoked that he’s got a new skiing partner.

Photo of the Week: Sweet Powder Snow

Wednesday’s storm treated many mountain areas of the Northeast to 6-12″ of fresh snow, and the off-piste skiing, especially, has improved dramatically. There’s still little to no base in many mid to lower elevation zones, but in some areas higher up, it’s finally starting to look a bit more like mid winter. Here’s an image captured while skiing through the storm in Vermont’s Mad River Valley earlier this week. Without a doubt, it was nice to see some snow flying! Ski you out there. – Brian

Northeast Skiers/Riders On Tour: 2 Week Old Utah Powder

Matt Bruhns - Wasatch Mtns, UT ©Brian Mohr/Ember Photography

Although it hasn’t snowed over Utah’s Wasatch Mountains for two weeks, Matt Bruhns of Waterbury, Vermont still managed to hide behind the curtain for a few turns off Kessler Peak over the weekend. We shared a fun tour with Matt after a couple of afternoons buy propecia cheap spent attending an outdoor industry tradeshow in Salt Lake City. We enjoyed a 2700′ descent along a conifer laden ridgeline that eventually spilled into a patchwork of aspen glades, meadows and scraggly scrub oaks.
