Photo(s) of the Week: Halloween Turns, Family Style

Had the big orange blob on the weather radar been another 100 miles to our west, we would have had time to continue searching around our crawl space for some spooky monster masks to wear out skiing… But for the sake of staying dry, especially with Lil’ Maiana in tow, we could linger no longer. It turns out that a freak rain shower had us climbing our favorite local mountain with umbrellas in our hands, anyway. But, about half way to the top, the showers passed – leaving only patches of fog and mist in their wake.

Although the snow was melting steadily and we had only a 2-3″ skim coat of a base to work with, the skiing was slippery, silky and surprisingly smooth. We enjoyed a couple of nice runs before returning for a late breakfast back home.

The costumes finally came out later in the day (it was hard to pass up a $3 thrift shop chicken suit for Maiana, below). With rain falling steadily, and given that Maiana’s only eight months old, she didn’t seem to mind that we cut our trick or treating short.

OctSNOWber was good to us this year, giving us nearly a week of fun skiing in Vermont’s northern Green Mountains. It’s hard telling what SNOWvember will bring, but by the looks of the weather maps, there’s a little snow coming our way Thursday into Friday. Stay tuned to our Weather & Snow page for details.

Ski you out there.

Photo of the Week: Beautiful October Snow

Old Man Winter paid us a visit again in the Northeast this week, and although he’s not here to stay for the winter quite yet, he did give us a very nice taste of the season ahead. A good 6″+ piled up along the highest elevations of the northern Green Mountains and Adirondacks, with snow sticking down to about 1300′ at sunrise Friday morning. Countless skiers across the region enjoyed their first turns of the season Thursday and Friday, and the skiing should hold up in many areas well into the week ahead.

Climbing into the mountains this morning, we enjoyed snow squalls giving way to breaks of warm sunshine. The world was refreshingly cooler than it had been in months, and the air moist and easy to breathe. We spotted the fresh tracks of a young moose wandering, and we followed black bear sign until we lost it amid drifting snow up the mountain. First the Worcester Range, and then the Grotons came into view. Camel’s Hump and Mt. Mansfield remained obscured in the clouds.

Old Man Winter whispered to us in the trees, luring us up the mountain the way no one or nothing else does. Topping out at nearly 3700′, another snow squall kissed our cheeks. Hot tea. Goggles. We didn’t resist gravity for long…and the Old Man cushioned our descent with several inches of fresh powdery snow. Beautiful, white, October Snow.

Ski you out there.

Photo of the Week: 365 Days Ago

We made our first turns of the season (on snow) on October 8th last year, and another blast of higher-elevation snow lured us out again, on October 12th. And while the fresh snow cover was ultra-thin, and the freshly fallen leaves at lower elevations skied even better, another ski season had arrived.

It wasn’t for another few weeks that skiing became part of daily life, but those first ski adventures were special. Peak foliage was still lingering at the lower elevations. Friends we hadn’t seen since springtime came out of the woodwork. And upon dropping into to that first run of the year, and dancing with gravity in a way we had not done so in months, there was no denying our love for sliding on snow.

There’s always a fun sense of suspense in the air this time of year for northeast skiers. It could snow an inch or three in early October, as it did last year, but then not snow again for weeks. Or the snow gods could throw down several feet of snow later in the month, and keep at it straight through springtime.

This year? It’s hard telling when we’ll be out on the snow again. Soon though.

Ski you out there.

Photo of the Week (after some time off): The Itch

With Mother Nature throwing us some truly spectacular late summer weather lately… and with things like picking apples, riding trails, swimming, paddling, harvesting, hiking, long board sessions, garden feasts, trail building, doing wood, helping friends, a few mountain climbs, hanging with family and more apple picking demanding most of our time…updating the website here has taken the back seat to just about everything else lately. Thanks for understanding. Do not despair, however, as the nights have been cool, the first frost has come and gone (has anyone been sliding on frost?) and the official cheap drugs viagra start of the fall season is just a couple of days away.

Within just a matter of weeks, snow will very likely be falling in the mountain. No doubt, we’re feeling that itch to ski again. But what will it take to scratch that itch this time around? A nice, heavy frost? A micro dusting? Or the first solid dump? It’s always such a great time of year to be skiers. (Click on the thumbnail below to see larger photo)

Til soon.
