Irene’s Rains Create New Slides in the Dacks, Whites…

Natural landslide paths (aka “slides”) are in abundance throughout New York’s highest Adirondacks. And thanks to Irene’s flooding rains (the same rains that have ravaged many parts of the northeast), the list of skiable slide paths is now longer than ever. Take a peek at the nice update that our friends at Adirondack Backcountry Skiing put together after flying over the Adirondacks earlier this week. Many of the new slides are quite steep, and they will be especially prone to avalanching…while others will likely offer safer and lower angle skiing options.

We have also heard rumors of a new slidepath that has opened us alongside Hillman’s Highway near Tuckerman’s Ravine. More details on this later…

Vermont’s Chickering-Ayers Wins Chilean Freeskiing Championships

Lars Chickering-Ayers stood atop another podium this past weekend after skiing the course at Chile’s Valle El Arpa resort with impressive speed and style. You can take a peek at Lars’ run in the video by sliding the run time on the video to 6:50 and watching from there… (Allow video to load completely, first). Lars’ younger brother Silas also skied well over the weekend. The Chickering-Ayers brothers, as well as Tom Runcie – all of whom grew up skiing Mad River Glen – have been in Argentina and Chile for much of August, skiing and competing at the first two events of the Freeskiing World Tour season.

Photo of the Week: Patagonian Dreams

We had the great fortune of getting close to this beautiful mountain a few years back. It stretched for the sky like no other peak around us. It’s the birthplace of a great Chilean river, the endangered Rio Baker. And lately, we’ve been dreaming of skiing it.

It’s tempting to live out our dreams and go back to this beautiful mountain – to push deeper into the wilderness of the mighty Rio Baker watershed; to help give a voice to the majority of Chileans who don’t support the four giant hydro-dams proposed for this region; and to continue having hope.

It’s tempting, yes….very tempting.

Mansfield…

Stowe, VT – Mountain Bike Vermont (MTBVT) recently launched their first annual Green Mountain Showdown event, the first photo competition in the state dedicated to all facets of mountain biking, from singletrack to downhill to jumping. Brought to you by the Trapp Family Lodge, Vermont Mountain Bike Association and MTBVT.com, the Green Mountain Showdown is an opportunity for Northeastern photographers to showcase their talents.

Five lucky photographers have been selected by our judging panel and will have until August 27, 2011, to collect a portfolio of work based on the theme “Bike Culture in the Green Mountains.”

“Our goal is to elevate Vermont’s status as the heart of mountain biking in the Eastern United States,” says contest organizer Ryan Thibault. “The Green Mountain Showdown is a chance to showcase the state’s affinity towards recreation and it gives our local talent the opportunity to celebrate their skill. It’s going to make for a fantastic show!”

The final day of the competition will be August 27, 2011, and will involve a group ride during the day and a party at the Trapp Family Lodge that night. The competing photographers will have their images edited into a slideshow format to be presented to the judges who will score them according to artistic quality and technical skill. Prize purse includes over $1,500 cash for 1st place as well as tons of bike and camera gear. Awards will also be presented for 2nd place and “best shot” category of the competition.

The evening gala will begin at 5:30pm near the Outdoor Center at Trapps and riders of all ages are encouraged to gather for an evening of great pictures, a BBQ, fine ales and live music. Tickets are $25.00 for the event or $40.00 for the event plus a fantastic meal, and they include entry to the evening gala and a day ticket to the Trapp’s trail network. Proceeds will support VMBA and the expansion of the Adams Camp trail project.
