It’s possible that Tuesday night (Mar 3) was the pinnacle of this winter season in Vermont. By 8pm, fresh snow from another passing weather system was piling up fast…freshening the surface of a deep snow pack unaffected by warm temps or wet precip for nearly two months. We knew that above freezing temps were likely on Wednesday, so we grabbed the headlamps and set off. We enjoyed a taste of our winter wonderland unlike any other this season, if not in our lifetimes. The howl of the wind above the forest canopy, the fresh snow flying, and heavily snow-sculpted landscape left us in awe of Old Man Winter. Here’s a quick snap from our late night tour, captured just before midnight along Vermont’s Green Mountain divide…

The above freezing temps today spared most aspects and slopes above 2000′, and will probably leave us with just a slightly stiffer, but still very playful, snow pack down low. Cooler than normal temps in the days ahead will continue to preserve the soft, powdery snow on non-solar aspects, especially. We are living in a skiers’ paradise right now, and there’s no end in sight.

Ski you in the mountains.

The new snow we picked up late last week and weekend (16″+ in some areas) set us up for a beautiful stretch of skiing over this past week in Vermont, especially in our more sheltered, upper-elevation forests. Steeper lines characterized by narrow drainages, rocky ledges and frozen waterfalls are in rare form right now, and are a joy to ski. Any new snow is welcome this coming week, as the snow pack in many areas, including the more wind-scoured and alpine zones, could use a little freshening.

Ski you out there.

Photo of the Week: Really Cold Smoke

© Brian Mohr/ EmberPhoto

There’s nothing like a late-afternoon mission into some favorite local steeps on a windy, -5F degree afternoon in Vermont’s Green Mountains to get the powder flying… After 30+ days of cold and snow, snow, snow, it’s incredible how commonplace scenes like this have become. And it’s only mid-February.

Ski you out there.

Stand Up Paddling (SUP) - Costa Rica, Central America - BIC Sport ©Brian Mohr/ EmberPhoto - All rights reserved

While giving the snow a chance to pile up in the Great White North, we’re playing around with some Pacific swell, a lil’ offshore wind, and the 10′ BIC SUP Air – a highly versatile, inflatable surfboard that is as much at home in the rapids of a Vermont river in springtime as it is in chest high surf during the Central American dry season…It’s especially sweet fir cruising around quiet bays and backwaters with your favorite 2 year old on board, or for a spontaneous offshore fishing adventure. And, you can stuff it into your check-in bag.

Ski you out there.
