This Weekend: Bolton to Barns, MRG Tel/Ski Fest and more…

With March’s longer and warmer days upon us, it’s a great time to get together with friends on skis and celebrate. Several events coming up this weekend will make this especially easy and fun to do, so get out there and make the most of another great winter season, before it’s time to plant the garden again!

Bolton to Barns Backcountry Ski Tour
On Saturday, March 10th, the 3rd Annual Bolton to the Barns Ski Tour will present backcountry skiers with a great opportunity to spend a day in the hills of Vermont with friends and fellow skiers, while helping the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps create opportunities for young Vermonters wishing to play an active role in conserving the Vermont landscape. After the tour, skiers can enjoy a warm fire, warm food (chili…and CREPES), libations and some great camaraderie.

If you can’t make the tour, but would like to support the event and the VYCC, please head to this link. For more info, you can also contact Breck Knauft at 802-434-3969 x110. Please help spread the word, too. Thanks!

Mad River Glen Telemark/Ski Festival
Don’t miss the “Mother of all Telemark Festivals” at Vermont’s Mad River Glen this Saturday and Sunday, March 10 and 11, 2012. This weekend long gathering of skiers (telemark gear is not required!) features great music, a big demo of the latest gear, a world-record attempt at the largest group telemark turn, helpful ski instruction, a few telemark competitions, a wild apres-ski party on Saturday (featuring Lawson’s Finest) and more… Head to the North American Telemark Organization (NATO) website for all the details.

Photo of the Week: 10 Days to Remember

The last ten days collectively served as one of the many great reasons we love to call the Northeast home. It also provided a stark and beautiful contrast to the thin cover conditions defining much of this season, and it got just about everyone and their uncles out skiing for a while. With as much as 8″ of fresh snow falling just last night across some Northeast mountain areas, the skiing in the higher-elevations, especially, continues to be as good as it gets right now.

Mid-winter conditions will continue to prevail on Tuesday, but be ready for another solid dose of spring Wednesday and Thursday. We’re heading up to 5000’+ on Wednesday. How about you?

Vermont’s Ryan Cochran-Siegle Wins Gold at World Junior Chamionships

Vermont’s Cochran Family, which operates Cochran’s Ski Area in Richmond, VT, made history again on Friday, March 2 when Ryan Cochran-Siegle of Starksboro – the 19 year old son of 1972 Olympic gold medalist Barbara Ann Cochran – skied away with the downhill title at the world junior championships in central Italy. His skiing is truly impressive, and is well worth check out in this video footage of his winning run below.

For more info, check out Friday’s story in the Burlington Free Press – HERE.

Go Ryan, and go Vermont!

As Good As It Gets…

The skiing and riding is as good as it gets right now across the Northeast, with bottomless snows in the backcountry and perfect trail skiing conditions at the resorts this week. With more fresh snow piling up Thursday into Friday, there should be nothing stopping any of us from getting out there and making the most of the next 48 hours. Call in sick, cancel those appointments, put it off til next week…make it happen. The time is now. You only live once, I think.

Ski you out there.

Photo(s) of the Week: Vacation Week Storm!

A string of storms that began producing snow last Wednesday produced as much as 40-50″ of snow over the course of several days in some high elevation zones along the northern Green Mountain Divide. Generally, mountain areas in the Northeast picked up 10 to 25″ of fresh snow from these systems, which has improved snow coverage dramatically. Well-timed with the wrap up of one of the busiest weeks of the ski season (due to school vacation week), the storm lured countless skiers and riders to alpine and nordic ski areas, countless backcountry destinations, and to a great variety of snow-season events (including the Stowe Derby), for what were undoubtedly some of the nicest snow conditions of the season. The storm also made it possible for skiers and riders to slide into many lines that have not yet been safely skiable this season, like this little alley right here, off Vermont’s Monroe Skyline.

The weather maps indicate that we should pick up more snow on and off all week all, with a solid pulse of snow late Wednesday through Thursday, especially. It’s nice to see Old Man Winter taking good care of us again. (Click on images below to enlarge.) – Brian
