May in the Northeast Mountains

Life is good here in the Northeast when we are still skiing nearly top to bottom lines in May. And this past Sunday, whether you were climbing for turns in one of your favorite springtime playgrounds, riding lifts at Sugarbush, Killington or Jay – or simply skiing vicariously through others – skiers were kicking off yet another month of skiing here in the Northeast US and Canada. In fact, May – for those who got out skiing last October– makes for the eighth month of the season that we’ve been skiing (on natural snow) here in the Northeast. We’ll take it.

Here are a few images from these first few days of May. And look farther below for a photo gallery from the day.

FREE Skiing At Sugarbush on May 1

That’s right, Sugarbush is celebrating skiing in May this year by offering F R E E lift-served skiing on the mountain on Sunday, May 1. French fries, however, may still require that you break out a $20 bill… If you haven’t hung up your boards just yet, and feel like enjoying some really fun top to bottom skiing on Vermont’s Lincoln Peak, get over there on Sunday. Head to this link on the Sugarbush website to get your name on the will call list for a free ticket. What a cool thing for a ski area to do. Thanks Sugarbush!

Photo of the Week: Ode to Biking, Skiing…Norway

It was just a year ago this week that we and our friends Forrest Twombly and Tom Hite set off on an bicycle-powered skiing adventure through the coastal mountains of Arctic Norway. And while flowers bloom and our rivers flow with rain and snowmelt here in the northeast, the experience is fresh on our minds. Thinking about Norway has also got us motivated once again to hop on our bikes and go skiing right here in Vermont…while we still can.

Photo of the Week: Really Good Friday

After a rather exciting stretch of unsettled weather brought thunderstorms, flooding rains and mountain snows to the northeast over the last week, the weather gods treated us to one of nicest days of the spring on Friday – aka Earth Day and/or Good Friday. The skies were clear, temps rose into the 50s in the valleys and winds were light. We took advantage of this weather window while skiing in one of our favorite spots in the northeast. It was a quiet and beautiful day, with winter’s brush strokes coloring the scene at higher elevations, and only the rush of the wind, the trickle of water and the songs of birds filling the air. Indeed, it was a really good Friday. (Click smaller image to enlarge. Skier: Dave Bouchard) – Brian

Photo of the Week: The Sweetness of Spring

Where the sun was shining strong on Friday, the snow was nothing shy of delectable – and the mountains were alive with the soothing sounds of singing birds and snow melt. Skiing with friends in the fresh air… It was like we were sipping on the sweetness of spring. – Brian
