Video: Almost Mother’s Day

Last turns of the season on natural snow in Vermont’s Green Mountains… on the Marquette Backcountry Skis. The grass skiing on the lower mountain, after we ran out of snow, was in its element. Enjoy!

Photo of the Week: Winter’s Last Gasp

It’s been a beautiful and sunshine-filled week across much of the Northeast, a great stretch of weather for getting out on the bikes, taking the inaugural dip in a pond or milking winter’s lingering snowpack. After a few great runs earlier in the week, including one with Brian’s mom (go Christa!) down the classic and flowing Perry Merrill run at Stowe, we saved ourselves a little extra time on Wednesday to kick back and relax along the rooftop of Vermont’s Green Mountains. As the sun approached the horizon, we strolled along a nice, dry stretch of VT’s historic Long Trail, bound for some of our very last turns of the season.

Meathead Films Radio Interview on VPR

In case you missed it (like we did – b/c it was simply snowing too hard to think about anything else in mid-February), you can listen now to Geoff McDonald and Chris James, co-owners of the Vermont-based Meathead Films, talk about 10 years of making ski movies on Vermont Public Radio (VPR). Click HERE to grab the podcast and check out the interview. McDonald, James and their films have a knack for getting many eastern skiers psyched about the season, while showcasing the great variety of lift-served, backcountry and even urban skiing that the East has to offer. Enjoy!

Photo(s) of the Week: Thanks Mom!

Most of us who love to ski can probably attribute learning to ski, our interest in the mountains or even just our desire to go have some fun… to our mothers. For this alone, we should all be doing something extra special for our moms this weekend. Throw in the beautiful fresh snow currently falling across the high country of the Northeast and the chance today (Thurs 5/5), Friday and Saturday? to enjoy what might just be some of the last fresh tracks of the season around here, and it’s clear that we all have a lot to be thankful for. Here’s to Mother Nature, our moms and another beautiful weekend ahead! (The images below were captured on Thursday, May 5th! in Vermont’s Green Mountains. Click on them to enlarge.)

Backcountry Update: Winter’s Last Hurrah?

As Mother’s Day approaches, it looks like Mother Nature is treating herself to one last glimpse of winter’s beauty in the mountains. It will likely be snowing in the high Adirondacks just a few hours after I write this, and by midnight, it should be snowing steadily up high in the Greens and Whites, too…With enough moisture still streaming over the next 36 hours, fresh tracks in the binding-deep to shin-deep range could reward skiers willing to climb and ski for turns – especially on Thursday afternoon and very early Friday morning. There’s still plenty of coverage up high and out of the sun, and with some sufficiently dense snow on Thursday, even medium to lower angle ski area trails that have already lost most their coverage (at friendly ski areas that allow skinning) could become very fun to ski again Thursday and Friday morning. Snow may have a tough time accumulating below 2500′, so don’t let the rain in the valleys deter you.

The forecast above is valid for the higher elevations of the north central Greens on Tuesday 5/4 evening. Ski you out there.
