Oct 21, 2010 – Although you might have had to ski it to believe it, the skiing in the days following last weekend’s nor’easter has been beautiful and utterly spring like. With increasingly mild days in the valleys, and crispy cool nights, the snow’s been transforming to a near-perfect corn snow in the mountains – where it’s been feeling more like April, than October. Untracked terrain has offered peel-away conditions, and the snow line has only retreated slightly. Here’s an image we captured under the evening moon this week, atop one of Vermont’s highest mountains. The other images were captured during sunset. Let’s hope for more snow to freshen things up over the next 48 hours!

Old Man Winter Returns!
The first significant snow-producing nor’easter of the 2010-11 season dumped 10-30+″ of heavy snow over the highest mountain areas of the Northeast this weekend (VT’s Greens and NY’s Adirondacks, especially), and skiers have been out since Friday (10/15) morning embracing the return of our good friend Old Man Winter. Here are a few images from Friday and the weekend below, and please read our latest *Backcountry Update* for more thoughts on the storm and skiing this week (Skiers: Emily , Brian (grey hat/white goggles) and Dave Bouchard (dark helmet))

Smuggler’s Notch Off-Piste
Stompin Grounds from Chris Nelson on Vimeo.
Vermont skier and photographer/videographer Chris Nelson has compiled some nice footage from his 2009-10 skiing adventures, centered around Vermont’s Smuggler’s Notch area. This short film entitled, “Stompin’ Grounds”, features some of last season’s bountiful high-elevation snowfalls, as well as some classic northeastern “chute” and gully skiing… Enjoy!

Upcoming Vermont Ski Swaps
Although Old Man Winter is already on his way back to the mountains of the northeast this weekend, there remain plenty of ski swaps on the calendar for those needing to shed or acquire a little ski gear. Thanks to SkiMaven.com for compiling this nice list of Vermont ski swaps taking place this fall.

Photo of the Week: Let it Snow!
It was exactly one year ago when northeastern skiers were making their first turns of the season on our local ski hills and higher elevation pastures. Over 6″ of snow fell at the higher elevations (just enough to coat skiers’ favorite moss- and grass-coated hillsides), and when the fog and clouds cleared, it was a treat for the eyes. Once again, forecasts are calling for temperatures on Friday and Saturday to be cold enough to support steady snowfall at higher elevations across the north country of the northeast. Meanwhile, moisture streaming in from a major nor’easter winding up off the coast could lead to significant accumulations of the white stuff…
Let it snow!
